There are two new members joining the Legislative Assembly of Ontario today, but the balance of power remains the same. The Liberals retained their open seat in Vaughan, while the Progressive Conservatives lost in Kitchener Waterloo to the NDP, surprising many.

The result leaves the governing Liberals a single seat shy of a majority government, meaning both opposition parties continue to wield consider power over the government’s agenda.

That makes things interesting for all parties, and the stakeholders who are impacted by the decisions political parties make. The result of last Thursday’s by-elections makes it likely there will be a general election this spring, following the introduction of the next budget, which means these next three months, prior to the December recess, will be critical for anyone with a legislative agenda.

I expect a busy fall for us here at Broadview Strategy Group as a result.
